The Evolution of Herding Cats Cabaret: A Musical Journey

Welcome to the world of Herding Cats Cabaret! Founded by Musical Director Mike Gaffney and supported by Artistic Director Michelle Carson, this unique ensemble emerged from a shared passion for music and community.

The Beginning: A Fortuitous Meeting

Mike and I first crossed paths during the Milton Follies production of “Mamma Mia” in late 2024. I took on the role of Tanya, part of the dynamic trio, while Mike portrayed Bill, Sophie’s potential father. Throughout this vibrant production, I was thrilled to be appointed as the Writer and Director for the 2025 Milton Ulladulla Entertainers Inc. A longstanding non-profit volunteer group, this organization is dedicated to producing high-quality variety shows that showcase the incredible talents of local community members. With over $1 million raised for various community groups, it’s a remarkable endeavor.

My show, titled “Connecting Hearts,” took shape amidst my responsibilities as Tanya and running my local business while also performing as a lead singer in a rock band. I sought the perfect Musical Director, and I was honored when Mike accepted the role.

Creating a Musical Masterpiece

Mike meticulously assembled an orchestra for “Connecting Hearts,” including lead and rhythm guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, cello, violin, trumpet, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and percussion. We managed a cast of 55 incredible individuals with the support of our creative team—truly a talented group of musicians, singers, actors, dancers, and circus performers. Our efforts paid off, raising over $50,000 from seven shows in June 2025. The success of “Connecting Hearts” caught the attention of the prestigious C.A.T 2025 awards, where we received nominations in three categories, including Music Director of the Year.

Following the show, Mike and our orchestral members decided to continue making music together, adding a few new faces to the mix. During a breakfast meeting, we brainstormed the idea of creating something new, blending our diverse musical and artistic backgrounds. Thus, Herding Cats Cabaret was born—a name that perfectly encapsulates the delightful chaos of bringing us all together!

A Community of Inclusivity and Creativity

At Herding Cats Cabaret, we pride ourselves on inclusivity, encouragement, and mutual respect. New members are always welcome to audition, and our ensemble has grown to include an orchestra, a diverse group of vocalists, and support performers, creating a starting cast of 18.

We embrace flexibility in our performances, crafting personalized Cabaret shows for special events, whether it’s a full orchestra for a wedding or an intimate string section for a cozy gathering. From corporate gigs to acoustic campfire performances and jazz extravaganzas, we are your one-stop shop for tailor-made musical experiences.

Our favorite intimate venue is Foxys in the Plaza, located in the heart of Ulladulla. There, we offer a variety of entertaining experiences that captivate audiences with beautiful vocals and stunning harmonies.
